Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1960, Sibylle Schwarz is one of the greatest German surrealist artists, graphic designers, DNA and collage artist, and an excellent practitioner of New Concept Art, living today.

 

Ms. Schwarz, as an outstanding artist and designer, designed the city emblem of Berlin, Germany several decades ago. For decades, she has been invited to design for almost all the famous brands like Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Shell, IBM, Nike, Puma, Dior, Hermes, Channel, and many more. The designs showcase to the world her different artistic styles. She has also been invited to design for the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and ELLE, all of which have been warmly received and greatly admired.

 

Despite all her great achievements in designing, she now declines all invitations for designing and has become a professional artist, due to her great passion for pure artistic creation. In the mid-1980s, Ms. Schwarz’s artistic style greatly changed to surrealism, which was much influenced by Freud’s philosophy. She once explained, “I have been deeply influenced by Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. My works are artistic expression of pure spirit.”

       Sibylle Schwarz, is a master of western art, loves traditional Chinese culture, and is engaged in almost all art fields. As a teenager, she began drawing illustrations for famous European publishers, featuring a realistic style. She once told me, “My achievements in surrealistic painting owe a lot to my solid foundation of realistic basic skills.” For decades, she has made great achievements in paintings of different styles. She is leading European Mail Art and her works of Mail Art are a combination of eastern and western cultures, which breaks time and space boundaries. These stamps of historic significance are records of her journeys through her unique artistic language. Ray Johnson, an American master of Mail Art, is the founder of the art form; while Ms. Schwarz is the first western artist who has added Chinese elements to Mail Art.        Sibylle Schwarz is also an outstanding collage artist. Her exquisite collage artworks have brought amazing economic benefits to world famous enterprises. Deutsche Bank, the largest European financial enterprise, adopted the logo designed by Ms. Schwarz, which is a collage artwork with Euro elements. She also designed a huge collage artwork for IBM, which has been called the “Artwork of the Century,” by the western media.        As a surrealistic artist, Ms. Schwarz has successfully tried different painting skills and styles. People are impressed by her ever-changing creative ideas, artistic styles and painting philosophies, and she has been called “the Queen of One-line Drawing.”  She was a master of one-line drawing when she was only twenty years old, and her works could match those of Picasso, Miro, and Dali. What makes her work so special is her close relationship with Chinese Taoist culture. Schwarz says, “I was attracted by Chinese Taoist culture when I was only 12. I have to make myself ‘in a state of emptiness’ each time before I start painting.”  Her words remind us of Chinese calligraphy-----art of lines. Both art forms require the artists to focus and express themselves naturally. Ms. Schwarz’s achievements in realistic painting, collage art, Mail Art, and surrealistic painting reflect the changes and developments of western art.  It is no exaggeration to say she is not only a great artist, but also a living textbook of western art history.        Unlike most western artists, Ms. Schwarz has a deep relationship with, and insights into, traditional Chinese arts. She once said, “I admire traditional Chinese arts. I was attracted by Chinese arts when I was only 12 when my grandpa told me stories of Chinese Peking Opera, traditional Chinese painting, and Chinese calligraphy. Thanks to Professor Yan, I’ve had an opportunity to participate in an ‘East Meets West’ program, which actually opened a door for me to Chinese arts, and allows my dream to come true.  Professor Yan also sent me Chinese Xuan paper, brushes and ink, which I use every day for painting. It only took me 30 minutes to finish the surrealistic artwork ‘仁Ren (benevolence), 义Yi (righteousness), 礼Li (ritual), 智Zhi (intelligence), 信Xin (trustworthiness)’ in standard script after I received the original artwork by Professor Zhao Hong from Professor Yan.”  Ms. Schwarz has amazing cognitive capability and memory. She can even paint based on a seal cutting artwork. Just as Weihong Yan, assistant professor of Chinese Language/Culture, the School of Humanities, Pfeiffer University, and director of Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer, said, “It is admirable that Ms. Schwarz created surrealistic paintings from artworks of Chinese calligraphy and seal cutting.  Such a combination of Chinese and western aesthetic philosophies bonds the eastern and western viewers together, which has never been done before.” Schwarz goes on to say, “Although I’ve gotten hundreds of invitations every day to world-class exhibitions, I’m looking forward to participating in the program ‘East Meets West’ by Professor Yan and Professor Zhao. I also hope the surrealistic painting artworks based on 540 Chinese radicals from Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the first dictionary of Chinese characters, can be published soon. The artworks are of great historic significance.        Her surrealistic art philosophy comes from Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Therefore, her artworks focus on depicting people’s inner hearts.  Ms. Schwarz is also a charity ambassador. She has expressed through her unique artworks her love and sympathy to victims suffering from an earthquake that struck Ya’an, a city in Sichuan province, China on April 20, 2013.  She spent a sleepless night at home creating over 40 artworks, including: Chinese Prime Minister Li Loves People, Crying Sisters, Crying, China Earthquake, When Birds Stop Singing, and more, to express her love and good wishes to quake victims. 2012年，他还是“East Meets West” (“中西合璧， 翰墨华韵”)（“Art to Poetry to Music”) 全美大型音乐书法推广项目的创立者和实施者，该项目将中国汉字书法与和古典歌剧以及交响乐融合，使得书法成为舞台视觉新艺术形式；他与赵宏教授、德国艺术家西蓓莉女士合作，创作了大型作品“《说文解字》部首与超现实主义绘画” 和《中国古文字与超现实主义绘画》等以多种媒介方式更广更深的大文化战略，在海外全面推广中国书法文化。

 

2010年开始，他与趙宏教授合作，历时3年多的巨著《囊括万殊 裁成一相: 中国汉字“六体书”艺术》--“The Brush Speaks the Civilization: the Art of Six Scripts of Chinese Writing”一書（高档宣纸印刷，689頁/中國高教出版社2012年12月28日出版發行。该书成为了5000年第一部以西方視角解讀中國五千年漢字藝術巨著，参加*2015年10月14日参加德國法蘭克福書展/书的简介：https://vimeo.com/117949190

目前，他致力于中国文化海外推广战略研究： 中国汉字书法和水墨艺术海外推广、海外中文教学、以及中国书法与波普艺术、超现实主义艺术和西方主流艺术教育的跨学科研究。
